“So you want to do Montessori at home ?”
Shhhhhh - Here are the secrets that Montessori teachers won’t tell you
by Sue Bradley, author of ‘8 Critical Things You Need Know About Doing Montessori At Home (Practical Advice and Proven Techniques used by Montessori Teachers)’.
What if you could give your child all the advantages of an early Montessori education – without spending a single dollar on expensive preschools? I’m going to let you in on six secrets that Montessori teachers won’t tell you (I wonder if you can find all six?). By the time you finish reading this article, you will be ready to take the plunge and start teaching your preschooler at home using the classic Montessori method (it’s a lot easier than you think).
You can keep track of the secrets you discover by typing them here

Secret #6
Montessori preschools seem to be sprouting up everywhere. They’re really popular, and for good reason – an early Montessori education will give your child many advantages. Your child will:
Develop self confidence
Develop self motivation
Develop joyful self-discipline
Function independently
Develop a lifelong passion for learning
Spontaneously choose to engage in purposeful/meaningful activities
Cultivate the ability to express himself and think with clarity
Learn to concentrate
Work at his own pace and rhythm without competition from other kids
Learn to read, write, and do math…..even before he gets to elementary/primary school!
I call this the ‘Montessori Advantage’. Who wouldn’t want this advantage for their child?
Just look at the Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the young founders of Google, the popular internet search engine. They credit a big chunk of their success t their Montessori education – they say it made them more etc etc etc.

Does your child have the potential to become the next Larry Page or Sergey Brin? Are you doing everything you can to help him develop this potential?

Now let me ask you a question. If I can show you a proven way to give your child the Montessori Advantage at home, would you be willing to give it a try? Just keep reading and I will show you how it can be done….and it’s easier than you think.

What I learned about doing Montessori at home
I wanted to send my son Justin to a Montessori preschool but I was appalled at the cost – over $500 per month! That’s xx dollars each and every school day. Quite frankly, our family doesn’t have extra cash for that kind of thing, so I started to read about Montessori to see if I could do it at home instead. At first, I was quite discouraged. Here is what I found out:
Montessori schools use special high quality Montessori ‘materials’ or toys from traditional suppliers like Nienhuis Montessori. These materials can be very expensive. As a parent, if I want to purchase these materials, then I am charged the same high prices as the schools.
Montessori materials need to be shown to children in a special way. Montessori teachers call these ‘presentations’. If you are not a Montessori teacher, it is very frustrating trying to find out how to present the materials.
Montessori materials need to be presented in a specific sequence. Each activity is specially designed to lay the foundation for the next activity. But once again, it takes a lot of digging to figure out the proper order to present the materials.
Here’s the kicker - I looked everywhere and I couldn’t find a single source that could provide me with Montessori materials and ALSO show me how to use them properly with my child (and in what order). I’m sure you can imagine how frustrated I was! But don’t let me discourage you – I’m just giving you some background. The good news is coming next.
There IS an easy way to do Montessori at home
I’m excited to tell you that I eventually discovered you CAN:
Use top notch, authentic Montessori materials without spending a fortune
Follow easy, ‘how-to’ instructions for presenting materials using the classic Montessori method
Go at your own pace
Teach your child reading, writing, and math in 4 easy steps
In other words, you can do Montessori at home…and it’s easier than you think once you know about these secrets that I uncovered:

Secret #1: You don’t have to be a teacher to do Montessori at home.
And…you don’t need to be in a classroom atmosphere for your child to get the full benefit of a Montessori education…since at the preschool age, children for the most part work independently…see the PRMA website

Secret #2: Kids love working with Montessori materials
Each item challenges the child to learn, and he will not be satisfied until he masters it. Even after he masters an activity, it is common to continue to come back to it again. Would you like it if your kids were happily absorbed in their play and never got sick of their toys? Think of all the things you could get done during this time!
[add Google boy description of being engrossed in their work]

Secret #3: Kids learn reading, writing, and math in 4 basic steps (keep reading…further on I describe each of these steps in detail)

Secret #4: Your child can teach himself to read, write, and do math
Montessori materials are specially designed so that children can play with the materials by themselves and learn the concepts on their own. This is why Montessori classes are usually much larger than regular preschools – because the teachers are observing the children and not interacting or entertaining them all the time.

Secret #5: Your child can learn to read, write, and do math at a very young age – long before they even go to elementary/primary school

(Don’t forget to keep track of your secrets!)

Now that you know these secrets, you can easily picture your child doing Montessori at home.

I was pretty sure there must be lots of parents like you and me out there – people who want to do Montessori at home but don’t know exactly where to start. So I put all the information I gathered into an e-Book called “8 Critical Things You Need Know About Doing Montessori At Home (Practical Advice and Proven Techniques used by Montessori Teachers)”. I don’t want you to waste a lot of time and effort duplicating the work that I have already done gathering this information. So please, do yourself a favor and read this e-Book (of course, it’s free):

I also developed a simple, step-by-step system to teach my son reading, writing and math. It’s based on the Steps below, using the classic Montessori method. While you’re reading about each Step you can have a peek at the Step-by-Step packages I created….you’ll be amazed and relieved to discover how easy it is to do Montessori at home using the step-by-step system I developed.

Read and Write in 4 Simple Steps
There are 4 basic steps to learning language skills using the Montessori method:

1. Language Step 1
The first step is to learn the shapes and sounds of all the letters.
Montessori children learn letter shapes and sounds using
Sandpaper Letters. These are wooden cards with sandpaper letter shapes glued onto each one. The children trace the letter shape with their fingers as they say the sound out loud.

So, Montessori children learn their letters phonetically – that is, they learn the sound the letter makes rather than the name of the letter. It has been demonstrated over and over that this is a superior way to teach children to read (testimonial?). While they are playing with the sandpaper letters, children also enjoy matching the letter to objects in their surrounding, or to Beginning Sound Cards (that have pictures of words that start with that letter).

Take a look at my Language Step 1 package….you’ll see that it contains everything you need to get started with reading and writing, including an Instruction Book with authentic Montessori presentations – easy, step-by-step instructions for presenting the material to your child using the classic Montessori method.

2. Language Step 2
The next step in language development is to start learning to write with a pencil. This step is usually combined with learning to write letters, a frustrating experience for most children! Instead, Montessori children learn to control a pencil as a separate activity from learning to write their letters. To do this, they play with the Metal Insets. These are thin metal frames, with cut-out shapes (insets).

Children trace both the inset and the frame and then fill the shapes using colored pencils and eventually learn to make symmetrical patterns that resemble stained glass windows. They enjoy doing this for hours, and while doing so they are gaining the practice of controlling a pencil, a skill they will later use when they learn to write words.

Take a look at my Language Step 2 package…you’ll see that I’ve put together all the things you need – even a pencil holder and a stack of paper that’s an exact fit for the Metal Insets!

3. Language Step 3
Next, children learn to create words on their own! Usually children have to do this by writing letters, as skill that often develops later. Instead, the Montessori method makes use of the Moveable Alphabet, thin wooden letters that a child can manipulate to make words. In this way, Montessori children learn to read and ‘write’ long before most other children.

Children can think up their own words, or use Picture Word Cards to give them ideas. Ideally the word is printed on the back of the Picture Word Cards so the child can check their work to see if they used the right letters to spell the word.

Take a look at my Language Step 3 package…I’m sure you can imagine how much fun your child will have with this one!

4. Language Step 4

The 4th step in learning language is to read someone else’s words (with the Moveable Alphabet, children read words they created themselves, which is not truly reading yet). To do this, Montessori children work with the
Phonetic Object Box. This is a box that contains 30 or 40 miniature objects representing words that are spelled phonetically using 3 or 4 letters. Accompanying the box is a set of word cards – one card for each object in the box. By sounding out the words on the cards and matching the cards with the objects in the box, children practice reading.

Another way to practice reading someone else’s words is to use Action Cards (sometimes called Command Cards), which are verbs printed on small cards. Children read the word and then perform the action printed on the cards. Children can also practice silent reading using Secret Cards. Children select a card, silently read the ‘secret’ word printed on it, and then return the card to the basket.

Take a look at my Language Step 4 package. This is my favourite one, and I’m extremely proud of it. It includes the Object Box plus 4 sets of word cards as described above…and of course, an Instruction Book.

Basic Math in 4 Simple Steps

There are 4 basic steps to learning math skills using the Montessori method.

1. Math Step 1
The first step is to learn the values of the numbers 1 – 10.
Lots of small children can count in sequence from 1 – 10, but they don’t really know the values associated with the numbers (for example, that ‘2’ is twice as big as ‘1’). Montessori children learn this concept effortlessly by playing with the famous Montessori Number Rods

Once they are familiar with the Number Rods, you can introduce the Number Tablets, which are numerals printed on a piece of stiff cardboard. Children lean the number tablets up against the proper number rod

Take a look at my Math Step 1 package….you’ll see that it contains everything you need to get started with math, including an Instruction Book with authentic Montessori presentations – easy, step-by-step instructions for presenting the material to your child using the classic Montessori method.

2. Math Step 2
The second step is to learn to associate numerals with their quantities
Montessori children use Spindle Boxes to learn this concept. Numbers are printed on the back of each section of the spindle box, and children place the correct number of spindles in each section. Since there is also a section labeled ‘0’, children are introduced to the concept of zero.

Montessori children also use Numerals and Counters to reinforce the concept. These are separate wooden numbers and small round discs or counters. Children lay out the numerals, and underneath them place the correct number of counters. By placing the counters in two columns underneath the numerals, children are introduced to the concept of odd and even numbers.

When children are first introduced to the Numerals and Counters, they sometimes use Numerals and Counters Cards, which are printed with the pattern, and children place the numerals and counters on top.

Take a look at my Math Step 2 package…you’ll see that it contains all these things, as well as an Instruction Book.

3. Math Step 3
Next, children are introduced to the decimal system. Here, they learn category names (units, tens, hundreds, and thousands) and the relative sizes of the categories by playing with the famous Montessori Golden Beads. These are beads that are wired together so that by handling them, children can get a muscular impression of how big ‘1000’ is compared to ‘1’ or ‘100’ or ‘10’.

After being introduced to the Golden Beads, children are shown the Number Cards. These are wooden cards that have numbers from 1 to 1000 printed on them. Working with the Large Number Cards and the Golden Beads

together, children learn to associate the written symbols for the categories of the decimal system with their quantities [add description of using the 2-part cards? Or make this a bonus].

Take a look at my Math Step 3 package…you’ll see that it contains both of these items…and a few other things you’ll need.

4. Math Step 4
The 4th step in learning basic math concepts is to learn the names and values of the numbers 11 to 19 (the ‘teens’) and then from 10 to 90 by tens (the ‘tens’). Finally they learn to count from 1 to 99. Once again there is a special Montessori material designed to teach this – the Teens and Tens Boards, also sometimes called Seguin Boards. These boards have digit tablets that can slide over the numbers on the boards, allowing you to create any number from 1 to 99.

Children use beads along with the teens and tens boards to learn the math concepts. These include some of the Golden Beads introduced earlier (Step 3) and also colored bead bars called the Short Bead Stair [add description of using the 2-part cards…or make this a bonus]

Take a look at my Math Step 4 package. This is my biggest package and it’s packed with lots of great stuff!
